Property tax – it can increase up to double

Being the owner of a property, whether for your own residence or as an investment, is a big step in life, so what about the subsequent payment of property tax? Whether it is a sale, purchase, acquisition or gift, the tax return must be submitted by January 31 to the office responsible for the location where your property is located. The advantage is that you only submit the tax return in this case once, and you will only be sent a postal order with the amount of your payment every year. In case you have the real estate in the joint property of the spouses, only one of the spouses submits the tax return. Pay attention to the fact that if you sell, donate or otherwise dispose of the property, you must report this fact to the tax office.

We currently have one of the lowest property taxes in the whole of Europe in the Czech republic and it is an exclusive income of municipalities. The government is currently discussing its increase – there is a speculation about an increase of the coefficient up to double, and the profit of this change, so roughly 6-8 billion CZK, would be collected by the state. This is one of the measures by which the government wants to improve the current state of the state budget, the deficit of  360,4 billion CZK for last year. In total, there are roughly 65 measures, the sum of which would exceed 70 billion CZK, however, the parties of the government coalition cannot agree on the increase of property tax yet.

Last year, 12,42 billion CZK were collected from the property tax, while the state costs of administration of this  tax were 1,2 billion CZK. The introduction of progression was rejected – the lowest tax would be paid for the first property and higher for each subsequent property, this is considered too much of a complication.
